Friday Night Music: Kenny Barron Does the “One Finger Snap”

March 14th, 2014 at 6:37 pm

I had this great, uptempo, hard bop Herbie Hancock tune “One Finger Snap” stuck in my noodle last week so I went up to YouTube and listened to him tear it up, as is his wont.

But then I thought, I’d really love to hear Kenny Barron, a quintessential hard bop pianist whom I used to hear all the time back in the day (e.g., at Bradlees, down on University Pl in Greenwich Village…don’t get me started about those daze!), hold forth on this tune.

Well, though the magic of the internet, and I mean that–I still can’t believe I was listening to this a few seconds after I thought about it–I found precisely that cut, and he really digs into it, chorus after chorus of edge-of-your-seat improvisation.

Enjoy!

Hey Jared, love your blog. Check out this video of Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, and Jack DeJohnette doing Canteloupe Island. I guarantee you’ll love it.
