We’re All Keynesians Now…(but we won’t be later)

Had a rousing discussion on the Diane Rehm show this AM on the automatic spending cuts part of the fiscal cliff.

One thing I’ve been struck by in the latest phase of this debate, noted in passing here, is the extent to which Repubicans, who for years have insisted that government spending doesn’t create jobs, are all the sudden clamoring about how the defense cuts in the sequestration will be a massive job killer.

I know, “A Politician Said Something Hypocritical Today” ain’t exactly a compelling headline.  But if you’re finding that listening to some of these folks makes your head hurt, I feel your pain.

My colleague Paul Van de Water makes the same point here.

One Response to “We’re All Keynesians Now…(but we won’t be later)”

This is actually a big deal — it’s really possible to make conservatives’ heads explode by saying, “If government doesn’t create jobs, let’s go ahead and close that base in your district/town/state”.
