Ivo's observation is intriguing to me. What would be the consequences if Germany went back to the Mark, and left everyone else in the Euro? When I reverse the logic in this post, the scenario I get doesn't look so bad. What's the downside for, say, the French?

Given the incoherence you heard from UK policy types on the austerity issue, doesn't it seem more likely that the persistence of countries in the Euro actually has less to do with a rational calculation of the likely consequences of leaving and more a generalized worry about national prestige and personal honor on the part of politicians. Which politician wants to be the chump who got rid of the Euro, after all? And in particular, who wants to be the first mover on this front, i.e., before people start recognizing the move's inevitability?
