Democracy thwarted in Birmingham, AL

The city council acted in the interest of low-wage workers, long left out of this and past economic expansions. Now the state legislature’s moving in to shut them down. Over at WaPo, with Ben S.

    If you read some of the news from AL, a great deal of the opposition comes, not from businesses in Birmingham, but from bedroom communities with (in one case) median home prices in the $400K range.

    They’re not looking to keep businesses there, they’re looking to keep cheap labor there from moving to places where the pay is better.

    In the Deep South, some things never change.
