Friday Musical Interlude: The Pinnacle of Creation

June 14th, 2013 at 5:19 pm

That would be the first movement of Bach’s Italian Concerto, masterfully played here by Alicia De Larrocha.  I simply know of no greater example of human creation.

We humans get up to all kinds of nasty things, from petty meanness to horror on a massive scale.  But listening to this, I’m often reminded of our potential.  Not that anyone before or since could match such genius as Bach’s, of course, but that we have within us the ability to, if not to make such music, then to hear it…to let it uplift us.  Perhaps that experience will lead us to uplift others in turn.

Thank you for introducing me to Alicia de Larrocha. I am in awe. What a treasure she was and I am sorry I didn’t hear of her while she was performing. I watched a video of her playing Mozart’s concerto #47 and I just kept thinking what a wonderful life this is that I can listen to such sublime sounds here in my living room. Thank you for the pleasure.

Glad to hear it. And yes, I’d say “awe” is precisely the response to her playing. Unbelievable sensitivity to the music.
